Thanks for visiting blurps.com, the official page of the Buckley Laboratory of Unusual Research Projects.  The laboratory mainly seeks projects related to genealogy and history and conducts primary research of published works, directories, public records, and local, state, and national archives.  Research projects are customarily conducted on behalf of clients and grantors and not for our own copyright or publication.  Research is generally confined to an area within a 100 mile radius of Charlotte, North Carolina. Unusual and "hard-to-find" requests are preferred...requests for answers not likely found on the web.

The laboratory provides research support for genealogists, historians, attorneys, developers, investigative agencies, lenders, reporters, authors, and individuals.

Local History and Legends. Our region, colonized by some of the earliest European settlers in the country, is rich in history.  The two Carolinas were among the original thirteen states.  Along with the history came many legends about patriots, scoundrels, folklore, and ghosts.  NPR recently aired a story about one legend in the region, the story of  "Tom Dooley".  If you are a historian, author, reporter, or just simply researching local history in our area, we can do the primary research for you.

Genealogy.  Of particular interest is family history research in our area. Archival land records, survey plats, birth records, marriage records, death records, recorded wills, and other public record searches are our specialty.  Census look-ups and tombstone inscriptions with photographs are additional specialties. We don't do pedigree charts but we will do research necessary to prepare them.

Title Search and Abstracts.  The laboratory provides simple title searches for developers and lenders.  Full title abstract and property history services of a more historical and genealogical value are preferred.  Simple title search requests may be referred or sub-contracted.

Fees.  BLURPS accepts a variety of projects with varying complexity and time requirements.  Total fees for a project may range from around ten dollars to several thousand dollars. A research agreement including a fee estimate and project scope definition is required before the laboratory accepts a project and a retainer may be required.

As an example of time requirements, a simple title search at the Mecklenburg Register of Deeds office usually takes under an hour.  A complete property history from the original land grant to the present may take several days to complete.

All research is conducted for a fee based upon an hourly rate plus expenses.
